Expedition Greenland North East

Last week the crew on board the “Dagmar Aaen” sailed through the largest fiord system in the world – the Scoresbysund - on the east coast of Greenland. Countless icebergs presented themselves to the crew during optimal sailing conditions. How far north they will be able to travel now is determined by the ice. The present ice conditions run conform to the actual trend, which means that the ice is continuing to melt and due to this, large amounts of ice are being pushed southward. The ice is especially compact off Greenland’s east coast, making it difficult to predict just how far north Arved Fuchs will be able to sail.

Dagmar Aaen in the shipyard

The „Dagmar Aaen“ spent a long winter on the west coast of Greenland, far away from her home port. After returning last fall, the ship has had to go through various repairs. In the Danish shipyard in Egernsund, the ship is being prepared for a new tour this coming summer. We will be reporting unregularly from here on her progress.

New book available

The new book “Nordatlantik – Eine Entdeckungsfahrt” (The North Atlantic – A Voyage of Discovery) concerns itself mainly with the sea, with life on the sea and with the North Atlantic cultural area. With Peter Sandmeyer as co-author, Arved Fuchs has written an impressive book about his latest journey, which he undertook with the “Dagmar Aaen” and his crew, on a long circle through the rough North Atlantic. From Newfoundland and Nova Scotia, the journey ventured across the Atlantic to Ireland and Scotland, during which various islands and their history played  a central role.

This new book is available through our shop. It is available only in German.

Tour "North Atlantic" 2010

It has been 469 days since Arved Fuchs and his cutter set out for the north-west coast of Greenland from where they followed the tracks of the historical Greely Expedition. A long winter spent not far from the community of Upernavik in Greenland followed. From here - the “North Atlantic Tour” began around Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, the Hybrids and the Orkney Islands.

During today’s press conference, Fuchs gave a summary of the past months. A five-part documentary will be shown on arte/ZDF.

Captain's report from Upernavik

A visit to the "Dagmar Aaen" was more than overdue. But an expedition project requires not only committed action on the spot; the organizational and financial foundations must also be taken care of continually. Lecture series, delivery dates for the new book manuscripts and many other things left me with little spare time. To put it directly... read more

Stormy turn of the year

The three overwinterers on board the "Dagmar Aaen" had to wait a long time for winter to arrive in Greenland's Upernavik. All the ice in the bay had disappeared before the turn of the year - the ship swam in open waters. Strong storms and temperatures above the freezing point offered an unusual picture on the west coast of Greenland. It finally started to get colder during the first days of the new year and a thin coat of ice slowly began to form around the expedition ship. The overwinterers Kai Meibaum, Rémy Toukouda and Martin Varga have already survived the most difficult point - the days are now starting to grow longer.

"Dagmar Aaen" heads for Upernavik

The crew on board the “Dagmar Aaen” experienced a violent storm on the weekend. After leaving the protected bay near Nuussuaq (Kraulshavn), we are now heading for Upernavik, where the ship will stay through the winter. We will be measuring and documenting glaciers along the way – for example the Cornell Glacier.

Dagmar Aaen arrived at Húsavík

Two weeks ago Arved Fuchs started to his new expedition "North pole dawn". Fromm the harbour in Hamburg the "Dagmar Aaen" sailed straight to Iceland, where Fuchs initiated the third international youth camp in Húsavík. On our ICE-Website the pupils will make a diary of the camp.

Sea rescue exercise

In preparation for their next expedition, Arved Fuchs and his crew took part in an extensive sea rescue exercise on the outer Flensburg Fiord. The training included the rescue of injured persons and the man overboard manoeuvre. Taking part, besides the “Dagmar Aaen”, were the German Institute for the Rescue of the Shipwrecked (DRzRS), the Waterside Police Flensburg, Dr. Wolfgang Baumeier from the University Hospital in Lübeck as well as Christian Müller-Ramcke from the German Air Rescue (DRF).
