EXPEDITIONS FROM 1977 - 1988

     

1977

The first expedition! Objective: Navigation of the rivers De Pas and George by traditional Indian canoes in the Canadian province of Quebec and using the simplest means, (no tent, no stove, no insulated mats and for food only flour and broad beans --- but fishing equipment allowed.) The expedition took two months with the first film coverage being produced by the NDR.

Longboat

1978

Borneo (Kalimantan) expedition. The Indonesian part of the island was traversed to the border of Sarawak and back by longboats and on foot. Stock-taking of the tree felling in the tropical rain forests was carried out and the effect on the environment and the natives documented.


1979

Journey to the west coast of Greenland. Extensive solo trips along the inland ice.

1980

First attempt to reach the North Pole on foot. Failed! Followed by solo trips in the Canadian Arctic. Arctic survival course given by friendly Inuits.


1981

Expedition (solo) in the Canadian Arctic. The attempt had to be abandoned after a polar bear had destroyed the tent and sledge and had eaten some of the provisions. Numerous excursions with the Inuits. Followed by an Atlantic crossing from Lake Huron / Canada to Hamburg by a 14 m sailing boat.


1982

Excursions to the north west Canadian coast, to Yukon and Ragged Range.

1983

Dog sledge expedition through inner Greenland following the trail of the Wegener- Expedition of 1931. After 70 days, the inland ice was crossed covering some parts which up to then had not been spanned before.

1984

The first and up to now only rounding of Cape Horn in winter by collapsible kayak. Up to today, repetitions of this journey have only been done in summer.


1985

Kayak expedition to the magnetic North Pole. Including a two week drift on an ice-floe.

 

Mit dem Kajk zum Magnetischen Nordpol

1986

Expedition to the "Cradle of the Storm". Through the Aleutian Islands by collapsible kayak.


1987

Second Borneo expedition Renewed stock-taking and publication of the devastating consequences caused by fires to clear woodland and tree felling in general.
Attempt to cross the North Sea from England by collapsible kayak. Due to persistent bad weather, the attempt was abandoned after 10 days at sea.

 


1988

Tierra del Fuego expedition. From Punta Arenas to Puerto Williams /Beagle Canal) by collapsible kayak.
Preparation and training for the North Pole expedition in Iqualuit / Baffin Island.
