The Russian Arctic Attempt at the north east passage The longest expedition made by Arved Fuchs, up to now, took 4 years. Its target was to round the North Pole by a historical route using a traditional sailing boat, the Dagmar Aaen. Alone the first part of the expedition was a sensation. For the first time a western boat was allowed to pass through the Russian Arctic. Spitsbergen, the Kara Sea and the White Sea are only a few of the stations along the route north. In the time that Russia was still The Soviet Union, it was possible to obtain permission from the officials to sail the waters north of Siberia. For two years the expedition was in a land shaken by threats of a political coup. It sailed through Franz-Joseph Land, latitude 81° north, at that time strictly prohibited, and spent nine months icebound in the Yenisei ice. Due to the extreme ice conditions at the height of Cape Tscheljuskin , the expedition crew was forced to return to Norway. |
