The North Pole expedition became known internationally under the name of ICEWALK.
An international expedition team of eight, fought its way to the geographical
North Pole in 56 days. Under the most severe conditions, with temperatures of
– 52° C, the team conquered the constantly moving pack-ice to complete 1000
Kilometres.
The
expedition, ICEWALK ,was under the patronage of the environmental section of
the UNO. Led by the Briton, Robert Swan, it was also seen as a movement to
bring attention to the environmental problems in the Arctic regions.
An
international youth camp was set up in the Arctic parallel to the expedition.
Here, young people were to live and carry out experiments on pollutants and
toxic wastes under the guidance of scientists .It was one of the aims of the
ICEWALK expedition, to encourage young people to be actively aware of the
problems of environmental destruction in the Polar regions.
With ICEWALK, Arved Fuchs became the first German to reach the North Pole on
foot.
