On 30. 12. 1989 Arved Fuchs made history. Together with the Italian mountaineer, Reinhold Messner, he reached the South Pole on that day .Thus, after the North Pole, he is not only the first German to reach both the North and the South Pole on foot but also the first person ever to succeed in reaching both Poles on ski and within a year.

In the course of this expedition, it was the first time that two people managed to cross the whole Antarctic continent on foot. Although pulling sledges of up to 130 Kgs. In weight ,Fuchs and Messner covered 2500 kilometres in the extremely short time of 92 days.
