The Virtual "Fram"
As you might know, between 1893 and 1896 the Norwegian explorer Fridtjof
Nansen tried to drift across the North Pole by having his ship "Fram"
frozen into the pack ice. Although he did not manage to rwach the North
Pole, he and Hjalmar Johansen at least got as far North as 86°14'.
Imagine that your are on board a new "Fram", sailing this same route and
comparing your observations with those that were made back then. This
virtual new Fram would have all the modern communication devices on board:
fax, satellite phone, internet, e-mail, just about everything.
Task:
inform your classmates about changes in the general travel conditions,
tell them about your impressions, your observations, about your feelings
during this modern drift with the pack ice. You will most certainly
experience a different Arctic in 2007 than Nansen did back in 19th
century. Compare the two expeditions, using some of the experiences that
other modern explorers, like the German Arved Fuchs, have had on recent
expeditions. Will your experiences be similar to theirs? Which conclusions
do you draw? Is there anything you would like to ask for from politics,
for example, given the experiences you've had during the cruise?
Form:
It is up to you to decide how you want to report on this journey. You
could write a diary, a travel journal, a series of e-mails, do a
power-point presenation or make a film on a DVD or create a computer
programme. The scientific methods you use aren't quite as important as are
a unique approach, new perspectives and your creativity.
Sources on information:
Pictures of the Arctic, pictures of the Fram and of Arved Fuchs' sailing
boat "Dagmar Aaen". You will have a collection of internet addresses and
relevant documents, maps and satellite data at your disposal. You can also
refer to Arved Fuchs' homepage.
