National Marine Conference in Berlin
While the new Federal Chancellor was being elected in the Reichstag in Berlin, the 1st National Marine Conference was taking place just a few kilometres from the Reichstag.
The conference had been planned and organised by the Federal Ministry for the Environment for a long time. The current Federal Environment Minister Steffi Lemke was present. The ‘who's who’ of research institutes, politics, marine technology and civil society came together for two days to exchange ideas in presentations, panels and one-to-one discussions. The bad news of the day: as one of its first official acts, the new government has abolished the marine commissioner. In view of the urgency of marine protection, this is a completely incomprehensible and irresponsible measure.
