July 21st, 2011: Day 1

The way to the top of the mountain led through fields of Alaskan lupine

Hiking up

We had breakfast at 9.00 at Gamli Baukur restaurant. Then we started off organizing the diary and kitchen teams as well as getting introduced to the I.C.E.- Simulation game. After everybody had introduced themselves, we had our first lecture. Dirk talked about climate change, especially in the Arctic, the human impact and the consequences.

Back at the guesthouse Visir we had lunch. Regina had cooked a delicious soup to warm us all up. Then we returned to the restaurant and Dirk continued his lecture.

At 15:30 h we started hiking up Husavikurfjall (417m).

The way up was rather steep, but with breathtaking views of snowcapped mountains, Husavik and its harbour as well as the countryside covered in flowers, mostly blue Alaskan lupine (Lupinus nootkatensis) – it was worth it !!! At the top we took a break enjoying the fantastic panorama.

We began the descent which was considerably shorter and arrived at the guesthouse at 18:30h. After Spaghetti for supper we had fun playing cards.

A wonderful second day!!!!
