I.C.E. 2012

Youth project

The international youth project „ICE- CLIMATE-EDUCATION“ will be held this year for the sixth time. For the first time, however, the international camp will take place on board a sailing ship; the “RYVAR”, which will greet the participants in the Norwegian city of Kristiansand. The journey will continue from there along the south-west coast to Stavanger and finally to Bergen.

The following program is planned for the Camp 2012:

  • The present situation of nomadic indigenous people living in Arctic areas of Scandinavia and Russia facing massive intrusion by oil and gas exploiting companies
  • The enormous climate effects of CO2 and methane emerging from thawing circum-arctic permafrost areas
  • The impact of increasing industrialisation and climate warming on wild caribou stocks and reindeer herds around the Arctic circle
  • The participants this year come from seven nations all together.
  • DThe participating nations are Germany (4), Estonia, Turkey, England, Namibia, Romania and Cyprus.

The following program is planned for the Camp 2012:

  • Lecture on climatic change (Arved Fuchs)
  • lecture on the rise of sea level (Kristin Richter)
  • lecture on the history of whale hunting (Ulrich Jordan),
  • lecture on the effect of climatic change on the safety of countries (Tillmann Schulze)
  • lecture on glacial melting (Ulrich Jordan)
  • a Blue Ice Tour, a tour over the Juklavass Glacier
  • a tour of the mineral oil museum in Stavanger among other things

The students will hold a speech on the effects of climatic change in their respective countries before the camp begins. There will also be a Global Warming Game during the camp.

A diary will be written during the camp as in the years before.
