The international youth camp "Ice Climate Education" will be celebrating a small jubilee this year. This will be the 10th version of the camp, which has taken place since the first camp in 2007 on Spitsbergen. Following a brak last year and a side trip in 2015 in the Tyrolese Alps, we will be returning to the water. From the 10th to the 16th of June the camp will be held on the "Ryvar", which offered a base camp in the years 2012 to 2014. The regional capital city Kiel will be the starting point of the journey. From there we will head straight across the Danish "South Seas" to Sonderborg.
This year's group of nine participants for the 10th camp includes for the first time, representatives from Italy and Luxemburg. The young people must first qualify for the ICE-camp through a school competition. This includes the completion of a project work on one of the following topics:
1.) Running empty - Melting glaciers threaten ecology & economy
2.) Virtual water going the wrong way - Threats to global freshwater resources
3.) Isopods on plastic diet - Impact of microplastic litter on aquatic habitats
The following students have qualified with their project work for this year's camp on board the "Ryvar":
Martina Kröll - Sprachen- und Realgymnasium Nikolaus Cusanus - Bruneck (Italy)
Claire van Mechelen - Athénée de Luxembourg - Luxemburg
Paulina Harm - Max-Josef-Stift Gymnasium - Munich
Markus Hermann Tiik - Miina Härma Gymnasium - Tartu (Estonia)
Leena Kattel - Miina Härma Gymnasium - Tartu (Estonia)
Oisín Boersma - Gymnasium Sylt - Westerland
Amanda Hebert - Hermann-Lietz-Schule - Schloss Bieberstein - Hofbieber
Jan Zwicklbauer - Hermann-Lietz-Schule - Schloss Bieberstein - Hofbieber
Selin Eren - Österreichisches St.-Georgs-Kolleg - Istanbul (Turkey)
Just as in the previous years, the young people will take part in a simulation game (Theme: Offshore Oil & Gas Industry in the Arctic). We are pleased as well to have scientists from the Leibniz Baltic Sea Research Institute and the Thünen Institute for Baltic Fisheries on board with us, who will give speeches on plastic litter and cod fisheries.
As in the previous camps the participants will write a diary together during the journey.
