Ocean Change 2025

10 years of climate expeditions in the name of science

Arved Fuchs and his sailing ship DAGMAR AAEN are embarking on a new adventure for science. For the tenth year in a row, he is continuing his OCEAN CHANGE climate expedition series around the Atlantic and the North Atlantic Current.

This year's leg is divided into two sea areas: The first leg will take in the Baltic Sea, the eastern Baltic Sea, while the second leg will cover the North Sea and the eastern Atlantic Ocean.

Ship of Opportunity

Thanks to state-of-the-art technology, the Dagmar Aaen will once again be used as a hub for information transmission as a ‘ship of opportunity’. Meteorological and oceanographic data such as salinity, CO2 saturation and surface water temperature can be freely tracked 24/7 in real time on the beluga.geomar.de platform. With a crew of eight on board, the new leg of the OCEAN CHANGE will also be an exciting journey into the world of ocean research.

It starts on 1 June in Flensburg.

Planned destinations after the shipyard period in Egernsund, Denmark:

On 5 June, the ‘Baltic Sea Day 2025’ will take place in Stralsund (Ozeaneum / Hafeninsel) under the motto ‘Healthy Baltic Sea - Healthy People’. Alongside three other research vessels, the Dagmar Aaen and her crew have been invited as a ‘Ship of Opportunity’. In Stralsund, four research institutions are contributing their Baltic Sea expertise to national and international marine policy - the Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency Rostock, the German Maritime Museum Stralsund, the Leibniz Institute for Baltic Sea Research Warnemünde and the Thünen Institute of Baltic Sea Fisheries.

The journey then continues via Greifswald and Gdansk (Poland) to Klaipėda (Lithuania) and Riga (Latvia). The journey continues past Gotland (Sweden) through the Kattegat and Skagerrak to the North Sea.

From 18 July, we will be guests at the ‘Waalem Polar Seminar’ on the North Frisian island of Föhr at the invitation of the ‘Swiss Polar Institute’. The so-called ‘Floating Platform Seminar’ is taking place as part of the current UN Ocean Decade and brings together numerous stakeholders and research projects from France, Germany, Denmark and Switzerland.

It will then travel through the English Channel towards Brittany and Cornwall in the eastern Atlantic.

Important points of the expedition

Ocean Change 2025

The ‘OCEAN CHANGE’ initiative by Arved Fuchs Expeditions has been focussing intensively on changes in the oceans and their impact on the climate and coastal landscapes since 2015. The Citizen Science project, which is linked to the SOOP (Shaping an Ocean of Possibilities) platform, aims to raise public awareness of the need to protect the oceans and the global climate, while at the same time providing scientific institutes on board the Dagmar Aaen with important data on a voluntary basis and free of charge.

In cooperation with the GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel and the Leibniz Institute for Baltic Sea Research, IOW-Warnemünde, the collected data will be transmitted live to the beluga.geomar.de platform. Data will also be collected by satellite for the German Weather Service.
Interested parties can also follow the expedition live: Videos of life on board and other exciting content are produced by a professional shore crew for the various broadcasting channels (blog ‘Logbook’, webcam, Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, podcast...). This means that everything from the current location and weather to scientifically relevant measurement data is covered.

„Arved keeps an eye on water“

By participating in the ‘Citizen Science’ pilot project ‘Sailing for Oxygen’ (organised by GEOMAR and Trans-Ocean e.V.), Arved Fuchs wants to encourage other sailing crews to actively participate in the collection of marine data in the Baltic Sea.

A camera attached to the jib boom of the Dagmar Aaen will be used to photograph the seawater throughout the expedition. The colour of the water alone provides scientists with valuable information on the ecological status.

The data collected here flows into the international ‘Citizen Science’ project EyeOnWater, in which people around the world are participating. Arved Fuchs wants to show how easily we can all support marine research with a smartphone and the EyeOnWater app.

„Arved keeps an eye on water“

The EyeOnWater concept consists of an app and a website. With the app, you as a user can contribute to science and provide information about the water colour of fresh and salt waters (lakes, rivers, coastal waters, seas and oceans) in your area or elsewhere. The measurement is sent to the central server, validated and stored, after which it is visible on the EyeOnWater website: www.eyeonwater.org

What do you measure? Water colour is an indication of life (e.g. algae) in the water.
Simply download the app and take part in the Citizen Science project.

UN Ocean Decade

Arved Fuchs, ambassador of the German committee of the current UN Ocean Decade and contemporary witness of climate change, has dedicated his life to protecting the polar regions and the oceans for over 40 years.

He and his international crew have already covered more than 45,000 nautical miles around the Atlantic and the "Gulf Stream" (AMOC - Atlantic meridional overturning circulation) on the ice-going sailing cutter Dagmar Aaen on the "OCEAN CHANGE" series of expeditions.

This year's leg is already the third "Dagmar Aaen" expedition, which will provide important data on the effects of the overheated Atlantic on the marine environment.

Arrival in the home port of Flensburg will be at the end of August / beginning of September, depending on the weather.

The globally popular reporting via social media, this website, the expedition navigator BELUGA, the expedition podcast, partnerships such as with the Gesellschaft für Maritime Technik e.V. and via the media will of course continue in 2025.
