Arrival in Brest

Our journey has taken us from Heligoland via Scheveningen, Boulogne, Alderney, St. Malo and now to Brest St. Malo is a real highlight. A beautiful old town. We have a crew change here in Brest. This morning at the crack of dawn Ann-Ca, Peter and Dieter leave us. Work is calling! At 03:45 we all stand on deck and say goodbye to the three of them - always a sad moment somehow. But tomorrow Till and Lukas are coming on board, so we'll be full again - and of course we're really looking forward to seeing them.

This morning we had a visit on board from Olivier. Olivier works for Meteo France on the development of new drift buoys. Over the past few years, we have repeatedly deployed buoys in the North Atlantic, at least one of which is still working. Olivier introduced us to a completely new generation of buoys. They are lighter than the old ones, much smaller - and they are actually made of wood! We had repeatedly highlighted the problem that plastic buoys are not sustainable and ultimately contribute to plastic pollution in the oceans. Despite their importance for science and weather forecasting. Some time ago, we were even able to recover a disused buoy off Iceland. We are looking forward to deploying the new generation of drifting buoys from aboard the Dagmar Aaen.
