The black box on the horizon baffles us. What is that? In the middle of the Baltic Sea? We sail from Stubbeköbing (on the Danish island of Falster) to Stralsund in glorious sunshine.

The unknown object comes closer. In the AIS (Automatic Identification System) we see the data of a lot of vessels travelling in this sea area, but the black box does not appear there. A little later, the secret is revealed: a submarine is crossing in front of the bow of the Dagmar Aaen. The box-shaped turret is clearly recognisable. The command post on the tower appears to be empty. We have no chance of identifying the submarine in any way. No number, no national flag, no AIS signal, nothing. Perhaps a harbinger of the extensive NATO manoeuvre that is taking place in the Baltic Sea these days.
