Idea


Before his planned sail around Spitzbergen in 2007, Arved Fuchs had the idea of starting an international youth camo which would have "global warming" as its main topic. This idea found immediate acceptance due to the fact that climatic problems had still not as yet been thoroughly dealt with by the media. We wanted to open the eyes of the participating young people and together with the scientist Dr. Dirk Notz and Ulrich Jordan, a teacher we are friends with, develop a concept around the subject matter we could concern ourselves with in this project.



The basic idea was to make the young people aware of these climatic problems.


If they could directly see which influence the changes in climate are having on Arctic regions, then they could get other students at their school interested and through talks inspire their fellow students and teachers to get involved in projects for the protection of the climate. This emotional aspect is very important for Arved Fuchs. In "normal" school lessons the students learn facts about the changes in climate; during a "climate camp" they would, however, be confronted directly with the effects. Small groups of ten or twelwe would then, besides listening to lectures by scientists, discuss and consider how they could handle this topic after returning home. This is an important aspect of the camp - each participant comes to his or her own conclusions and transports these back to their respective countries and tries then to get other students / friends interested in getting some drive or campaign startet. Each step, no matter how small, would be important. For Arved Fuchs it is important for the participants to learn the facts about why the ice in the Arctic regions is melting and which consequences are involved.


Changes


It is important that they learn that each person can help in small way to curb the climate changes. They cannot be stopped. But if the participants return home after the camp and in the future start buying regional products (and convince family and friends of doing the same), start pulling the plug out of the coffee machine when it is not in use and ride their bikes to the bakery insteas of using the big SUV, then they will have learned much during the week.
If they are able to get other friends interested, then they will have understood the basic idea of this project.
This is why we try, from our small office in Bad Bramstedt, to make the camp as international as possible. We dot not know beforehand how themes of climatic change are handled in schools in Romania or Estonia; we learn, however, during the camp that these topics are only dealt with in passing. Here as well, we are doing a sort of educational work and hope that the participants from these countries can perhaps get something going.
These, of course, are only small steps but when even the important politicians of the big nations have not recognized the problem and are not finding solutions, then maybe a few students at least can get something moving.



Project


The international youth camp "Ice Climate Education", which was initiated by Arved Fuchs, took place for the first time in 2007. As of the 17th of February, 2018, this youth camp project has been taken over by the in.media.vitae foundation project of Alexander and Iris Hofmann. The team around Arved Fuchs will continue to pursue the project both in terms of content and operation. In this way the cooperation between Arved Fuchs and this charitable foundation in Nuremberg, which began in the year 2017, can expand.



Arved Fuchs:" With the in.media.vitae foundation we have found a partner which matches our concept. The project is growing while the spirit and the themes of the Ice Climate Education camps remain unchanged. We share the same philosophy. The foundation of Iris and Alexander Hofnann takes a huge load off of our shoulders. The organizational effort and cost of these youth camps are considerable and for volunteers only possible through a huge effort on their part. This work load has now beek taken on for us by the in.media.vitae foundation. From now on we can concentrate 100% on the concept-related topics and therefore the continuance of the youth camps is ensured for the next few years. I am looking forward to the continuation and intensification of the cooperation with the in.media.vitae foundation, which has existed for some time and wish to personally thank the founders Iris and Alexander Hofmann for their engagement."


Iris and Alexander Hofmann on their part are "filled with enthusiasm over the project and also the trust shown to them by Arved Fuchs. We are looking forward to engaging ourselves through our own means but above all through our volunteer work in the areas of organization, finance, the support of sponsors and the transfer of our foundation to a documented non-profit project. This is done in close cooperation with the very competent volunteer workers on Arved Fuchs' team who will continue to plan and carry out the operational and content-related aspects of the project."


Arved Fuchs and the in.media.vitae foundation have firmly agreed to work together for at least the next five years and plan to further develop the project together beginning in 2018 with the eleventh ICE camp which will take place once again on the Baltic Sea on board the "Ryvar".

Idee


Im Vorfeld der geplanten Spitzbergen-Umrundung 2007 hatte Arved Fuchs die Idee, ein internationales Jugendcamp ins Leben zu rufen, in dem die Thematik "Global Warming" den Schwerpunkt bilden sollte. Diese Idee hatte sofort Zustimmung gefunden, da die Klimaproblematik in den Medien noch immer nicht ausführlich genug behandelt wird. Wir wollten den teilnehmenden Jugendlichen die Augen öffnen und erarbeiteten zusammen mit dem Wissenschaftler Dr. Dirk Notz und dem befreundeten Lehrer Ulrich Jordan ein Konzept, wie wir das Projekt mit Inhalten füllen konnten.



Die Grundidee war, die Jugendlichen für die Klimaproblematik zu sensibilisieren.


Würden sie direkt vor Ort sehen, welchen Einfluss der Klimawandel auf die Arktis hat, könnten sie an ihren Schulen vielleicht mehr bewegen und durch eigene Vorträge andere Mitschüler und Lehrer inspirieren, sich ebenfalls für den Klimaschutz einzusetzen.
Dieser emotionale Aspekt ist für Arved Fuchs sehr wichtig. Im "normalen" Schulunterricht erfahren die Schüler Fakten über den Klimawandel, in einem "Klimacamp" werden sie jedoch vor Ort mit den Auswirkungen konfrontiert. Es sind nur kleine Gruppen von zehn bis zwölf Teilnehmern, die neben den Vorträgen von Wissenschaftlern speziell in Diskussionen Lösungsansätze suchen sollen, wie sie nach der Rückkehr in die Heimat mit dem Erlernten umgehen sollen. Dies ist ein wichtiger Bestandteil der Camps - jeder Teilnehmer macht sich während und nach des Aufenthalts in der Arktis seine eigenen Gedanken, transportiert sie in seine Heimat und versucht dort, andere Schüler / Freunde anzustecken, Aktionen ins Leben zu rufen. Jeder kleine Schritt ist dabei wichtig.


Beitrag


Für Arved Fuchs ist es wichtig, dass die Teilnehmer nicht nur Fakten lernen, warum das Eis in der Arktis schmilzt und welche Auswirkungen dies haben wird. Es ist wichtig, dass sie lernen, dass jeder seinen kleinen Beitrag leisten kann, um den Klimawandel einzudämmen. Stoppen kann man ihn nicht. Aber wer nach einem Camp nach Hause reist und in Zukunft darauf achtet, regionale Produkte zu kaufen (und auch Familie / Freunde dazu überredet), den Stecker aus der Steckdose zu ziehen, wenn die Kaffeemaschine nicht benutzt wird, mit dem Fahrrad zum Bäcker fährt statt mit dem großen SUV, der hat schon viel gelernt in dieser Woche. Wer es dann noch schafft, im Freundeskreis andere anzustecken, hat die Grundidee des Projektes verstanden.
Daher versuchen wir von unserem kleinen Büro in Bad Bramstedt aus, dieses Camp möglichst international zu gestalten. Wir wissen nicht, wie der Klimawandel in Schulen in Rumänien oder Estland thematisiert wird - erfahren aber während des Camps, dass die Problematik dort teilweise nur am Rande besprochen wird. Auch hier betreiben wir eine Art Aufklärungsarbeit und hoffen, dass Teilnehmer dieser Länder an ihren Schulen etwas bewegen können. Das alles sind natürlich nur kleine Schritte, aber wenn schon die Politiker der großen Nationen das Problem noch immer nicht erkannt haben und keine Lösungen finden, dann können vielleicht einige wenige Schüler ein bisschen mehr bewegen.


Projektträger



Das 2007 erstmals durchgeführte internationale Jugendcamp "Ice Climate Education" von Arved Fuchs wird zum 17.02.2018 von der in.media.vitae foundation von Iris und Alexander Hofmann als Stiftungsprojekt übernommen. Das Team von Arved Fuchs wird dabei auch weiterhin das Projekt inhaltlich und operativ fortführen. Damit wird die im Jahr 2017 begonnene Zusammenarbeit zwischen Arved Fuchs und der gemeinnützigen Stiftung aus Nürnberg ausgebaut.


Arved Fuchs: "Mit der in.media.vitae foundation haben wir einen Partner gefunden, der unseren Idealvorstellungen entspricht. Das Projekt wächst, während Geist und Inhalte des Ice Climate Education Camps unverändert beibehalten werden. Wir teilen die gleiche Philosophie. Die Stiftung von Iris und Alexander Hofmann nimmt uns eine große Last von den Schultern. Organisatorischer und finanzieller Aufwand des Jugendcamps sind erheblich und für Ehrenamtler nur mit großem Aufwand zu bewältigen. Diese Last ist uns durch die in.media.vitae foundation abgenommen worden. Wir können uns fortan zu 100 Prozent auf die inhaltlichen Themen konzentrieren. Dadurch ist der Fortbestand des I.C.E. Jugendcamps für die nächsten Jahre gesichert. Ich freue mich auf die Weiterführung und Intensivierung der schon seit einiger Zeit bestehenden Zusammenarbeit mit der in.media.vitae foundation und danke den Stiftern Iris und Alexander Hofmann ganz persönlich für ihr Engagement."



Iris und Alexander Hofmann ihrerseits sind "begeistert von dem Projekt und auch dem Vertrauen von Arved Fuchs. Wir freuen uns darauf, uns durch eigene Mittel, aber vor allem durch unsere eigene ehrenamtliche Arbeit im Bereich Organisation, Finanzen, Betreuung von Förderern und die Überführung in ein dokumentiert gemeinnütziges Projekt unserer Stiftung einzubringen. Dies erfolgt in enger Zusammenarbeit mit den ausgesprochen kompetenten Ehrenamtlichen des Teams Arved Fuchs, die auch weiterhin operativ und inhaltlich das Projekt planen und durchführen."


 


Arved Fuchs und die in.media.vitae foundation haben eine mindestens 5-jährige Zusammenarbeit fest vereinbart und planen, gemeinsam das Projekt weiter zu entwickeln, beginnend 2018 mit der elften Auflage des ICE Camps, erneut auf der "Ryvar" in der Ostsee.
